...in spite of all the awesome shows that provide bookends for this one (especially Cleveland 8/26, Philadelphia 8/30)...I like to take an entire tour in its own context, and with that in mind I listened to this recording with rather low expectations, especially since the recording itself is a typical audience tape of an ampitheater, and this with a local crowd to boot (you can tell that the number of Deadheads are outnumbered by those who went to this show just to go to a concert)...the China>Rider alone is worth the price of admission. Once you get past the sound quality, as you will absolutley have to with all of the sud tapes of the Philly 8/30/1980 show, you will really like this show. 4 stars for performance, 2 stars for this (lone) recording.

Why 1 review? 81 has many buried treasures and this is one of them...
While nothing here will be mistaken for a best ever version, everything is played tight, competently, and with mucho energy. The china-rider is almost a southern rock version of the song- highly enjoyable. As is the rest of the show.

First Dead Pine Knob Show
Great show all three sets! The boys covered alot of great dead tunes. The crowd was really into this show. It started in the afternoon and ended at night. Everybody enjoyed the hot air balloons flying over including the band! The recording is not the best but a good flavor of how tight the band was.Enjoy!
